Topic 3: Sentence Structure.

Sentence structure is important and it gives context to what you're saying. For example: After learning the word "cake", just saying "cake" won't tell the person what you are wanting to say about cake. Adding the sentence endings will help give enough base details on the subject you wish to discuss.

Sentence Structure in a nutshell

  • Adding です to the end will inform the person of a present positive, now you're saying 'It is cake'.
  • でした is past positive, something was something, ケーキでした will tell the person 'There was cake'.
  • ケーキじゃありません。Present negative meaning there isn't any cake.
  • ケーキじゃありませんでした。Past negative meaning there was never cake.

Adding a verb in ます form to the end of a sentence let's the person know what happened to the thing that is the subject of the sentence. There are again present and past positives and negatives.

Sentence Structure for verbs

  • ケーキをたべます。 The present positive use of the verb for eating with cake as the subject means you do eat cake, or are going to eat cake.
  • ケーキをたべました。 The past positive means you have eaten cake.
  • ケーキをたべません。The present negative means you don't eat cake.
  • ケーキをたべませんでした。 The past negative means you have never eaten cake (somehow, lol)
